RBLXNN 10 Years Later

 Hello fellow ROBLOXians!

Back in 2012, I thought it'd be fun to document ROBLOX site updates and catalog item releases, which is exactly what I did. For over a year and a half, I would constantly upload to this blog. Sadly, in 2014, as I was now entering high school, and with the fact I felt like I was outgrowing ROBLOX, I decided to abruptly quit the blog.

I have no plans to bring back RBLXNN, but for anyone who for some reason happens to stumble across this ancient blog, I'd like to let you all know that I, Voiaman2, have a YouTube channel all about ROBLOX history; from games, to people, to items. If you're interested, then be sure to head on over and check out RetroDan on YouTube

I made many memories not only on this blog, but on ROBLOX as a whole. It was my childhood, and I met many fantastic people who I'd love to meet again. Thank you to all the viewers of this blog for allowing me to have a great time as a kid and to make memories with you all.

Halloween causes Chaos in 2013!

ROBLOX administrators have been telling the date of the opening of the Halloween Event, sadly the time has been extended and many players are going mad about this extended 12 hours!

'Hey guys. We know you're excited about the Halloween event. We're excited too. We want to be in there playing it as much as you do. What we're doing right now is testing it and making sure it WORKS before letting any players in. So please be patient. There will be plenty of time to play it when it's out.

I won't answer any questions about it.

[ kirby dance]' - ReeseMcBlox

Now, what do players have to say about this?

Or maybe it's because we've been waiting 2 week, we got no game, no exact time, nothing is being said by mods, and they can't tell time correctly. - Sgtbender2000

People aren't mad about how long the game is taking to make. People are mad because a few mods blatantly lied about when the game was being released

They could have told us that it would take a while to make, but no, they said 'Thursday Morning'

Learn how to read before you call others rude, you're the one rushing into arguments you know nothing about. - MechaWaffle

What do admins have to say to all these rude comments at the admins of ROBLOX?

'OK, so Gordon mentioned a possible time. He was wrong. It happens.

Truth is, when it comes to big events like this, there are actually very few people at ROBLOX who know everything about what's going to happen when. There are a lot of details and moving parts to something as vast and sophisticated as The Witching Hour -- design, story, programming, web engineering, marketing, and so on. In this case, the people who decide when it's ready to go live are Sorcus and me. And we've been very careful not to have an exact launch time. We're doing a lot of new, crazy stuff in this game; we've been working on it for quite a while. So it's natural that we're tweaking and polishing down to the last minute. It'll be ready when it's ready.

Be patient. You'll have more than two weeks to experience The Witching Hour. And the wait will be worth it.' - ChiefJustus

What do I say about this? Since the start, I have said that I know games take time to build, script, and all that, along with this being the biggest game on ROBLOX, they have to make the 20,000X20,000 map, 200+ in-game items, catalog items you win, and more than that.

So please, leave the Admins alone and let them work, and be glad you get the game at all.

Sorry for being gone for so long!

I am sorry everyone that this has not been active in quite a few months. I plan to start it up today, and I will be reviewing Halloween items, and as always, a page with the Gifts and what's in them!

Along with a guess of what's in it.

I hope you will stick with us.

- ROBLOX Helper - Dodgy Lorry Cap

Dodgy Lorry Driver's Cap
DodgyLorryEarlier ROBLOX released a hat called Dodgy Lorry Driver's Cap. No one knew how to get it until it's description was released, telling that you got it if you beat a special truck obby at BloxCON. And then the account DodgyLorry was created, making a brand new place. Just now he updated his profile saying the following.

"You earn the hat in BLOXcon London, but when Dodgy Larry the game goes into Alpha, you will be able to earn it. "

Meaning that you can get the hat once the game is finished.

Find the game here.

Watch the video of Dodgy Lorry below.

Zelios' Animations

After the blog post telling about Zelios, I decided to look into the animations he made, here they are, and they are AMAZING!

These animations are amazing, and I hope they do add animations like these to ROBLOX some day.

Zelios, Creating 3D art

Art is everywhere on ROBLOX–whether it’s the visual aesthetic of a virtually-built place, the design of your character’s clothing, or the look of a decal or thumbnail. Further still, we’ve come across a lot of off-site art directly inspired by ROBLOX, which brings us to Zelios. His fascination with art, like his fascination with ROBLOX, began at an early age. He began creating pieces of art based around the world of ROBLOX, and is now the premiere, go-to visual artist for game makers looking for stellar, high-resolution promotional art.

His clients include names you might recognize (we’re being sarcastic): Merely, TheGamer101, CloneTrooper1019, to rattle off a few. His intricate designs are built entirely from the ground up, and he works with his clients every step of the way to ensure that the finished pieces properly express their intent. I got the chance to talk with Zelios about a wide range of topics, including the life of a prolific visual artist on ROBLOX.

zelios4

“Everything around me is fuel for inspiration,” says Zelios, who then pauses. “I’ve been interested in drawing as far back as I can remember, and have also always been really into computers. I started in MS Paint and got pretty good at it, then I started to become interested in animations.”

This growing interest has manifested itself in several forms–ROBLOX wallpapers, custom user-themed 3D images, and even custom animations he’s shared via his online portfolio. Once he realized his skills were valuable to some of the top players on ROBLOX, he started charging ROBUX for his services (“if you’re good at something, never do it for free”, to quote one of my all-time favorite villains). Purchasing a custom-built digital render usually costs between 5,000 to 10,000 ROBUX. It sounds steep, but you get what you pay for. Zelios loops you in on the planning process, keeps you updated with each and every draft, and continually works with you to ensure that the finished piece looks exactly how you pictured it in your mind. According to Zelios, getting started is often the hardest part.

zelios5

“The thought process can be pretty rough sometimes. There’s been times where I’d be stuck for hours because I just couldn’t make up my mind about how a certain scene should be laid out,” he says. “I always try to think about how this person would want to be represented. I try to make it as perfect as possible.”

To design each piece, Zelios uses a combination of complex 2D and 3D software, including Adobe Photoshop and 3D Studio Max (which is a big step up from the software he started out with–a free program called MilkShape 3D). He also grabs parts and thumbnails from ROBLOX, and imports then into 3D Studio Max using 3DRipperDX, where he sets ROBLOX Studio to “wireframe” and “no texture” modes to investigate and capture usable meshes.

zelios6

“This specific process allows me to see how the meshes are made,” he added. “Once the 3D render is created, I import it into Photoshop to make small changes like adding or removing small parts. The average project takes anywhere from half a day, to two full days.”

As mentioned before, Zelios has attracted some very famous clients. Since Merely is currently a ROBLOX intern, we decided we’d chat with him briefly about the piece Zelios made at his request.

zelios2

“I asked Zelios to create a background of my ROBLOX avatar, and was not disappointed,” Merely says. “I found his artwork a few months ago, and was extremely impressed. His images bridge the gap between ROBLOX and reality. The precise shadows and reflections make his renderings come to life.”
swordslashZelios is also in the process of learning how to animate, and has posted some of his animation showcases to his DeviantArt page. These aren’t at the grand-master level of sophistication as his art and 3D renders, but he’s excited to be focusing on and learning about something new and challenging.
“The slash animation is an example of how a sword mesh could be used. It’s a really large sword, and very powerful. You have to charge up holding down the mouse button then release to perform a wide ranging slice attack,” he says.

zelios7

Having realized the potential for his artistic endeavors, Zelios fits into the grand scheme of ROBLOX in an interesting way. He tells me his goal is to eventually work here, making gear, hats and any other 3D assets necessary. This dream may be drawing close to reality–many members of our staff, as well as some of our most prolific builders, have taken a vested interest in what Zelios creates. We look forward to seeing where this goes. For now, and as always, here’s Zelios’ advice on being a visual artist on ROBLOX:

Get as inspired as you can. Inspiration fuels your imagination, and your imagination is a tool you use to shoot your creativity at your target audience. Make new and different things–things that only you can create. That’s something you learn through experience. If you have a client, put yourself in their shoes. Imagine what they’re looking forward to seeing, then make it.

ROBLOX has fixed this glitch, and anyone who bought an item yesterday will get it removed with NO REFUND.

But soon, they will be removed, for now, enjoy your glitched items.

Familiar Summer Interns

Last week, we brought on four up-and-coming engineers to join us in our never-ending quest to make ROBLOX better, faster, and more streamlined. These are names you’ll recognize if you’ve spent some time on ROBLOX–many of them are legends in the community. That’s right, being a power user on ROBLOX can lead to some great things, like an internship right here at ROBLOX HQ. Without further ado: the ROBLOX Summer Interns.

Stravant, formerly xlegox, is known across ROBLOX as an innovator. He was one of the first builders to create a real-time strategy game in ROBLOX (ever hear of a little game called Conquest? There were five of them), in addition to being one of the first builders to create a functioning train (and tracks!). The 20-year-old will be working on ROBLOX’s foundation. Oh, and his real name is Mark Langen.

ROBLOX: What’s the plan for this Summer?
Stravant: I’ll be working on tools in Studio–basically I’ll be creating and altering tools for builders. I’m also hoping improve the Studio experience. I just re-wrote the terrain generator, but there’s still a lot of room for improvements. I’m also working on a super secret building project that I don’t think I can talk about.

ROBLOX: What are your goals?

Stravant: I’m 100% vested in pursuing programming as a career. ROBLOX was the first step. Now, I’m studying computer engineering in college, and I hope to eventually work as a game developer. When you’re a game developer, you get to do a little bit of everything, which suits me.

MrDoomBringer, also known as Cliff Chapman in real life, has had quite the ROBLOX track record. The 21-year-old was already a ROBLOX moderator before accepting the internship, and was the first ROBLOX builder to create a little something you may have heard of: VIP shirts.

ROBLOX: What are you going to be doing here this Summer, Cliff?

MrDoomBringer: Whatever I can to try and make the website better. This involves several aspects. I’ll be working on internal moderation tools, primarily. The tools haven’t been touched in ages, so I’ll be bringing them up to speed. My overall goal is to make roblox.com a much smoother experience in general.

ROBLOX: Tell us a bit about yourself.

MrDoomBringer: Similar story to Mark–I’m currently in college and am studying computer engineering. I want to go into low-level software development, hopefully one day developing my very own indie game. ROBLOX sort of dragged me into programming at a young age, and showed me the patience and skill it takes to actually sit down and focus on building something big. I moved on to C++ and love the language–that’s what I hope to pursue after college.

Merely is the premiere collector of limited items on ROBLOX. He’s also created several popular ROBLOX titles, including Trade Hangout, a game where you can bargain with other users and make deals for limited items. His real name is Nathan Dean, and he joins our team along with his twin brother.

ROBLOX: What are you working on for the Summer?

Merely: I’m mostly going to be working on the web team, finding and fixing bugs. I’m also developing a new feature that would allow you to save your entire outfit, and load that getup with a click of the button. That way you can customize your character’s look, head to toe, then save it and load it easily. I’ve made an Outfit Extension that’s the most popular Chrome extension for ROBLOX, with over 6,500 users.

ROBLOX: Give us some personal background.

Merely: Well, I’m currently studying computer science and engineering. From very early on, I was extremely curious to discover how ROBLOX.com worked. My brother and I began reporting any and all bugs and glitches we would find. Over time, we did all we could as users to help improve the website.

Stravant: [Laughs] Meaning they did all they could to break the website.

Merely: [Laughs] Exactly.
Last but certainly not least, Merely’s twin brother Seranok (aka Matthew Dean) needs no introduction. The creator of Catalog Heaven, one of the most played games on ROBLOX to date, he’s eager to get to work fixing bugs and glitches.

ROBLOX: What are you doing for us this season?

Seranok: I’ve always been more curious about software, as opposed to hardware. I feel like my brother and I have done all we can from the outside to make ROBLOX better. Now, it feels good to come in and work from the inside to see what we can get done. I’ve been working on an extension that can rapidly look up items–you just type in an asset ID, then click on the item. I’ve also been working on a Chrome extension that notifies users when new catalog items come out, or change price. It already has 2,000 users.

As you can no doubt see from our recent staff hires, learning the ropes could land you a sweet gig, and not just here! Many of our users are growing up to be successful programmers, artists and game developers. There’s a massive spectrum of talents to acquire using ROBLOX, whether that’s on the Web, in Studio, or simply learning to make fun games. So keep building! You never know where you’ll end up.

Editor’s Note: Be careful when using Chrome extensions. Though useful, not all are made for your benefit. We recommend you never enter your password anywhere other than ROBLOX.com.

Be sure to go to the ROBLOX Maker Fair this weekend!

ROBLOX at Maker Faire Bay Area 2013
The time is nigh! This weekend – the 18th and 19th of May, to be exact – the entire ROBLOX team will be descending upon the San Mateo County Event Center for one of the Bay Area’s biggest events of the year:Maker Faire Bay Area. The Maker Faire figures to draw more than 100,000 attendees and hundreds of Makers — ROBLOX builders included. We will be showcasing the digital side of Maker culture right in the center of the Expo Hall and we’d love for you to join us at Booth 338.

With BLOXcon heading to Chicago, London and New York City this summer, we decided to overhaul our Maker Faire presence so we can still have an equally awesome time with our hometown crowd. We’re looking for as many of you California natives (and willing travelers) as possible to join us at the event. Think of it like a “mini-BLOXcon.”

What is Maker Faire?

There’s going to be a lot of awesome stuff to do.

  • Be among the first to see pieces of our summer BLOXcon content
  • Meet, build with and battle against ROBLOX admins (all of whom will be appearing in the booth at some point during the weekend, so keep an eye out) and fellow ROBLOXians
  • Get up close and personal with dynamic lighting (and take away tips and tricks that give you a competitive edge)
  • Play-test, experiment with and provide feedback on brand-new ROBLOX features and product development
  • Participate in collaborative, in-person building and playing

While you’re there, get your hands on nifty new schwag!

  • ROBLOX World Tour 2013 t-shirts
  • Real (as in, non-virtual) black pinstripe fedoras with ROBLOX logo hat pins
  • Discounted ROBLOX cards ($25 cards for $20)
  • Exclusive, virtual Maker Faire Fedora (only available if you redeem a Maker Faire ROBLOX card by June 3rd, 2013)
  • ROBLOX earbuds
Block Town Render

Of course, your ticket also gets you access to hundreds of other exhibitors, many of which are doing exciting things – digital and physical – to promote the Maker movement. All-day advance tickets start at $15 (12 and under) and $20 (13-21). Click here to see all the available options. You may be able to purchase tickets at the gate on the day(s) of the event, but the prices rise and rumor has it the number of available tickets is dwindling.

Whether you’re in the neighborhood or thinking about making the trek from afar, we really hope to see you there. Again, look for Booth 338 in the center of the Expo Hall.

Community Article - Improve Performance on ROBLOX

Hello all, here we have a post from our EX-Game Reviewer, on how to improve your performance.

FOR ANY OPERATING SYSTEM BELOW WINDOWS 7 (Vista Or XP) :

Ok,working around a slower OS is quite hard and more errors pop up when trying to install the important optimizing tools...

GRAPHICS: Ok,this is the most important thing with a lower level OS...Graphics drivers MUST be up to date for Roblox,or else Roblox will lag on simple games...How to update these drivers? Well, you viewers must have NVIDIA graphics,so to update them,go to Nvidia.com...Anyways,then go "Drivers" and click "All Drivers"...You will have 2 options, scan for updates manually or automattically with Option 2 (Recommended and efficient)...If you do need an update simply follow the instructions it gives you...Then you're done with that...

WINDOWS UPDATE:

This one is a quick one, make sure you check "Windows Update" (Start>Control Panel>Windows Update) every 2-4 weeks...

JAVA AND ADOBE:

These might seem unimportant for Roblox, but it is indeed essential...Adobe and Java are the things that allow images/videos to be shown on computers...As it might not seem like it,everytime anything moves on a Roblox server its an image, these are called frames,a high frame rate is good,20 frame rate is standard, good for simple Roblox games,1-10 frame rates per second is really bad and you would simply lag on every game on Roblox...Even when you're the only one on a server, your character moves even without touching anything because Roblox character limbs are welded, thus having that problem, which is not visable without focusing on the character hardly...So anyways, this was more of a lesson than a tip...Anyways,what I'm trying to say is that ALWAYS make sure Adobe and Java are update to date...

FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS:

(This section is complicated,so read carefully!)

RAZER GAME BOOSTER:

Alright, used for gaming in particular,it could be used as a practical way to get Roblox better performance, for this, you must download it at Razerzone.com>Products>Software...When you download it,go to Tools>Tweaks, there just select everything and tweak, after that I recommend you restart your computer (Optional)...After that it is indeed optional to go to Tools>Drivers that scan that any graphics drivers you installed need an update...

Advanced SystemCare 6 PRO (Free):

Alright, this one I had a great experience with...It really worked wonders...You must download it from iObit.com and after installation you will be brought to a screen with options and a big circular button that says "Scan",that is to do what you have selected...Now,best for selection is "Internet Boost" and "Malware Removal"...It is not really recommended to do any others as if you are not good with understanding the way computers work and improve...After this, you should restart your computer,REALLY recommended to do this...

Toodles! :3

Goodbye MasterChiefAlpha

After three years working for ROBLOX, MasterChiefAlpha is leaving.

Here is what he has to say:

Well ROBLOXians, it's been really fun, but it's time for the Master Chief to sail off to other stars.

I'm moving on to other projects beyond the scope of ROBLOX after today.

As some of you probably know, I was working with Reese and ChiefJustus to bring more community engagement to our forums. That remains a work in progress for our team, which will continue long after I'm gone, so please giving all the other mods the same respect you might give me.

(Or better, if you don't happen to like me. No mod can please everyone, but I've tried at least to be consistent and to amend myself when I found I was doing wrong by you guys. I hope ultimately I was able to do all right by you all.)

This is my last day so if anyone has any questions, now is the time. I can't reveal any ROBLOX secrets, but I'm sure there are a few things on your minds I can help lay to rest. :)

Peace, folks.

It will be sad for him to go, and he will be missed.

If you want to see him on the Admin of the Month review from a few months back, click here.

Goodbye MasterChiefAlpha, you will be missed by many people.
